Why Results Stop Holding

You Know Your Points. Some Cases Still Don't Move.

Most Acupuncturists know this patient. The complex neurological case, the chronic pain that has outlasted every protocol, the treatment that held on Monday and had faded by Thursday. More points rarely fix it. What changes your results is knowing why a treatment worked, so you can do it again.

01

Results That Don't Repeat

A treatment works once and not the next time. Without a clear method behind your zone selection, it's hard to tell what changed.

02

Cases Beyond Your Training

Stroke sequelae, tremor, MS and chronic neurological pain sit outside what standard Acupuncture training prepares you for.

03

Learning in Pieces

A weekend here, a book there, a video online. Each piece is useful, but they rarely fit together into one way of working.

Zhu's Scalp Acupuncture was built for exactly these cases.

How You'll Learn It

One System, Learned in Order, With Your Hands Guided

Scalp Acupuncture isn't one system. There are around ten schools, each with its own zone map, and they were never unified. Mix two maps and results become hard to repeat. That's why it matters to learn one map completely, in the right order, from teachers who can watch you work. If you've struggled with scalp Acupuncture before, this is often why. If you're new to it, it's the reason to learn it properly the first time.

One Lineage

  • Zhu's Scalp Acupuncture as Professor Ming Qing Zhu developed it
  • Taught by two of his direct disciples, every hour of all three days
  • One zone map and one method, start to finish

In the Right Order

  • Assessment, then zone selection, then needling
  • Jin Qi, Chou Qi and Dao Yin built on that foundation
  • Reassessment, so you know why a treatment worked and can repeat it

With Your Hands Guided

  • About 40% of each day is hands-on practice
  • Dr Shy and Dr Chang correct your needle depth, angle and technique as you work
  • 16 live patient demonstrations with the reasoning explained

As Dr Scott Ling says, nothing shortens the learning curve like watching the teachers treat real patients, then practising with your own hands corrected.

The System

What Makes Zhu's Scalp Acupuncture Its Own System

Zhu's Scalp Acupuncture is not a set of extra points. It has its own theory, its own technique and its own clinical logic.

A Complete System, Not a Technique

Its own theory, zone-based anatomy and needling method, grounded in classical Chinese medicine and informed by neuroscience. It starts from the TCM diagnosis you already make.

  • Rooted in classical TCM theory
  • Scalp zones mapped to cortical representation
  • Starts from the TCM diagnosis you already make
  • Works alongside your existing practice

Technique You Can Watch Working

Jin Qi and Chou Qi stimulation with Dao Yin therapeutic movement, designed so you can observe the patient's response during the session and adjust your treatment. Professor Zhu held that Dao Yin, not the needles alone, was what mattered most to learn.

  • Jin Qi and Chou Qi stimulation methods
  • Dao Yin integrated therapeutic movement
  • Minimal needles, precise placement
  • Reassessment within the session

Supervised From Day One

When Dr Shy and Dr Chang took up Professor Zhu's teaching, they redesigned Basics around hands-on practice, because the manipulation has to be felt, and put live patient demonstrations into every day of the course. That means 16 demonstrations, about 40% hands-on practice each day, and two instructors for 30 participants. Each demonstration shows the whole treatment: how the teacher talks with the patient, chooses zones, needles, guides Dao Yin and ends the session.

  • ~40% hands-on practice every day
  • 16 live patient demonstrations
  • Two instructors, 30 participants
  • No prior scalp Acupuncture experience required

The Lineage

Professor Zhu Built It. His Disciples Teach It.

Professor Ming Qing Zhu spent decades developing this system. Dr Ru Shan Shy and Dr Sheng Chun Chang trained under him directly, and so did our founder, Dr Scott Ling. The zone map, the needling and the Dao Yin you learn in Melbourne are Professor Zhu's own.

Your Instructors

Trained Directly by Professor Zhu. Now Training You.

Dr Ru Shan Shy & Dr Sheng Chun Chang
Co-Directors, ZSA Taiwan · Direct disciples of Professor Ming Qing Zhu

Dr Ru Shan Shy is a PhD candidate at Yang-Ming University (Institute of Neuroscience) and holds a Bachelor of Medicine from China Medical University. A direct disciple of Professor Ming Qing Zhu and co-director of ZSA Taiwan, she combines hospital-level neurological clinical experience with decades of ZSA teaching — bringing rigorous academic training to serious neurological presentations including stroke rehabilitation, brain injury, tremors and complex pain.

Dr Sheng Chun Chang holds degrees in Pharmacy, Neuroscience and Chinese Medicine, is co-director of ZSA Taiwan, and is a former physician at Taichung Tzu Chi Hospital. Also a direct disciple of Professor Zhu, his rare combination of disciplines lets him translate fluidly between the biomedical mechanisms of Zhu's Scalp Acupuncture and its classical theoretical foundations.

Together they are two of the most experienced Zhu's Scalp Acupuncture educators in the world, having trained more than 2,000 Acupuncturists across Asia, America, Australia and Europe through 50+ intensive sessions.

  • Dr Ru Shan Shy — PhD candidate (Yang-Ming University, Neuroscience); BMed (China Medical University)
  • Dr Sheng Chun Chang — degrees in Pharmacy, Neuroscience & Chinese Medicine; former physician, Taichung Tzu Chi Hospital
  • Both direct disciples of Professor Ming Qing Zhu & co-directors of ZSA Taiwan
  • More than 2,000 Acupuncturists trained across four continents over 50+ intensive sessions

From the Founder
I started learning Zhu's Scalp Acupuncture in 2016 and followed Professor Ming Qing Zhu wherever he taught: to Shanghai, to Malaysia, to his clinic in San Jose, and into his hospital internships in China, where I watched him treat stroke patients on the wards. SustainHealth Academy began because of him. In 2018 we brought him to Melbourne for our first Zhu's Scalp Acupuncture seminar. After COVID, Professor Zhu retired from teaching, so I invited Dr Shy and Dr Chang, who taught alongside him across China, to carry his teaching on. They trained under him, as I did. What they teach in Melbourne is what he taught us.

Basics Is Where the Journey Starts

After Basics, you choose from five Advanced courses, each taking the system deeper into one clinical area. Alongside them sits Guided Clinical Training: a one-day, one-on-one clinical internship where you treat real patients with Dr Shy and Dr Chang guiding your hands. It isn't a seminar, and you can take it any time after Basics.

FAQ

Common Questions

No prior scalp Acupuncture experience is required. ZSA is taught as a complete system from the ground up. A background in TCM or Acupuncture is helpful but not mandatory — the seminar is structured to be accessible for both beginners and experienced Acupuncturists.
Yes. Many Acupuncturists come to us after learning parts of scalp Acupuncture from books, videos or another course. Basics gives you one complete map, taught in order, so the pieces fit together. If you completed this seminar with another teacher or provider, the Speaker Switch reward takes 10% off your registration.
Five Advanced courses, each focused on one clinical area: neurology and pain, stroke and brain injury, women's and paediatric health, internal medicine and supportive cancer care, and inflammation, immunity and healthy longevity. Alongside them, Guided Clinical Training is a one-day, one-on-one clinical internship where you treat real patients under supervision. It has run four times since April 2025, and you can take it any time after Basics.
No. Basics is a complete system on its own, and you can use it in your clinic from the following week. The later courses are there when you want to go deeper.
Live patient demonstrations cover neurological conditions, pain management, internal medicine and complex chronic presentations. Cases are not pre-selected for simplicity — you will see real patients presenting with real clinical complexity, which is central to the ZSA learning model. Each demonstration shows the whole treatment, from the first conversation with the patient to the end of the session.
The training is presented in Chinese with English translation provided throughout all three days. Clinical discussions, case reasoning, technique instruction and Q&A are all translated in real time.
Dao Yin refers to therapeutic movement exercises integrated into ZSA treatment. They are combined with the needling so you can observe the patient's response within the session. No prior Dao Yin experience is required — it is introduced and practised within the seminar itself.
Not the hands-on skill. In the room, Dr Shy and Dr Chang correct how much force you use and how often you stimulate as you work. A screen can't do that. Our webinars cover theory and case discussion; the technique is learned in person.
The theory can feel heavy at first. Graduates tell us it settles with practice, and some choose to sit Basics a second time at the refresher rate. As one graduate, Jude Interino, put it: "The content of the seminar and the theory part seems overwhelming, but did work out at the end."
The seminar carries 19.5 CPD Points and is recognised by AACMA and ACUNZ. We recommend confirming recognition with your own professional association. Contact us at [email protected] if you need a letter of attendance or verification.
30 participants, with two master instructors — a 2:30 instructor-to-student ratio that keeps hands-on practice closely supervised and lets both Dr Shy and Dr Chang engage with each participant throughout the three days.
No. The live patient demonstrations and hands-on clinical practice cannot be recorded due to patient privacy, and ZSA relies on direct in-person transmission. Attending in person is the only way to receive this training.
You can register by bank transfer or credit card, and you can secure your place with a deposit. If you'd like to spread the cost, ask us about a payment plan — we arrange those individually by email. When you choose bank transfer, your seat is held for 72 hours (3 days) while your payment is made and confirmed. You will receive an email with the exact amount, our bank details and a unique reference number. All prices are in Australian dollars.
If the seminar is cancelled due to insufficient confirmed registrations, a full refund is offered. We recommend not booking non-refundable travel until you have written confirmation that the event is proceeding. View Terms, Conditions, Cancellations and Refund Policy
