About This Webinar

Is This Webinar For You?

Some patients arrive with a tic that has worsened for months, insomnia that won't lift, or pain no hospital can name — and a history that points to emotion but not to where the Qi has actually gone wrong. Neuropsychiatric presentations are hard to pin down by questioning alone, because what patients can put into words only goes so far. Dr Hongchun Yin's Modern Tongue Diagnostics (MTD) gives you something visible to work from: where the disturbance sits, how it is moving, and what it calls for.

In this webinar, Dr Yin introduces how to read neuropsychiatric presentations across the Upper, Middle and Lower Jiao of the tongue, using the Midline Theory, the Qi ascending and descending diagram and Ten Principle Syndrome Differentiation. You will follow real cases from first tongue to follow-up tongue and see how each change shaped the next Chinese herbal prescription. The case treatments are Chinese herbal medicine, and the tongue reading framework gives Acupuncturists a clearer diagnostic direction whatever modality they treat with.

Dr Yin is the founder of Modern Tongue Diagnostics and president of the Association of Modern Tongue Diagnostics. His work was selected as a 2025 finalist in the World Health Organization's Health and Heritage Innovation Global Open Call, and he has received the 2025 World Hua Tuo Medical Science Award and the 2025 Global Outstanding Contribution Award for TCM. He is an Executive Council Member of the World Federation of Chinese Medicine Societies (WFCMS), a Distinguished Clinical Expert at Beijing University of Chinese Medicine, a visiting professor at Shandong University of Traditional Chinese Medicine and an honorary adviser to the King's College London Centre for Integrative Chinese Medicine. He is the author of Modern Tongue Diagnostics in Chinese Medicine, and of two further Chinese-language titles, one of which received the WFCMS International Contribution Award.

What This Webinar Covers

01

Modern Tongue Diagnostics in Brief

How MTD joins traditional tongue diagnosis, holographic biology and modern medicine into one system of diagnosis and treatment — tracing the path from the classical tongue texts to Dr Yin's holographic map.

02

The Heart Reflection Area on the Tongue

Where Dr Yin places the heart on the tongue compared with its traditional location, and why the holographic position gives Acupuncturists a more precise reference point for reading cardiac and emotional presentations.

03

A Brief Introduction to the MTD Midline Theory

A first look at reading the midline from tip to root, and what a shift, a concave or convex section, a sideways curve or a break in the line can tell you about where the pathology sits.

04

A Brief Introduction to Qi Ascending and Descending, and Ten Principle Syndrome Differentiation

A short introduction to how these two added principles extend the classic framework — giving you a first look at how the direction of the Qi, the state of the Zang Fu and the flow through the three Jiao can be read together on a single tongue.

05

Observing Neuropsychiatric Disorders Across the Three Jiao

What the tip, the middle and the root of the tongue each reveal when the presentation is emotional or neuropsychiatric, and how to move from that reading to a clear treatment direction.

06

Case Studies: Childhood Tourette Syndrome and Emotion-Driven Illness

A 7-year-old boy with a worsening blink tic, followed across three visits as the tongue shifts from liver Qi rising to yang deficiency and the herbal strategy changes with it — and a 60-year-old woman with five years of unexplained perineal pain whose tongue pointed to long-suppressed anger and liver fire.

07

Case Study: Subacute Thyroiditis with Depression

A patient with left-sided neck pain, sleeplessness, severe morning depression and a sense of fear who had been unable to work for two years. A red spot on the thyroid reflection area of the tongue located the inflammation; at the second visit the spot had cleared, the pain had gone, her mood had lifted and she was back to managing her home, with a return to work within weeks.

08

Case Studies: Anxiety, Insomnia and Hair Loss

A post-cholecystectomy case of reversed Stomach Qi with stagnant heat in the Liver and Stomach, and a case of nervousness where red prickles at the tongue tip guided how much of Yin Qiao San to use — from a single herb to the full formula — with the tongue changing from an arrow shape to a rounded, normal form in one week.

09

Case Study: Black Tongue Coating After Intravenous Drips

A moist black coating that appeared after three days of intravenous drips for a cold, with each area of the tongue matched to its own herbs, and a follow-up ten days later showing the coating back to normal and the cold resolved.

What is Modern Tongue Diagnostics?

Modern Tongue Diagnostics (MTD) is a clinical system developed by Dr Hongchun Yin that integrates traditional Chinese tongue diagnosis with holographic biology and modern medicine. It maps organs, pathogens and Qi dynamics onto specific areas of the tongue and connects what is seen there to both herbal and acupuncture treatment strategies. The system includes tongue image correspondences for 103 Chinese herbs and was recognised as a finalist in the WHO's 2025 Health and Heritage Innovation Global Open Call.
